Elle Loui August

Elle Loui August is a writer, curator and researcher in Art History based in Ōtepoti Dunedin. Her exhibition-making and publishing centres the practices of artists, writers and critical thinkers from Aotearoa me Te Waipounamu, situating these within global discourses.

August’s recent research and exhibitions have focused on under-recognised artists and art histories in Aotearoa and exploring expanded frameworks that link artworks and ideas to history and place. Most recently, her exhibition Margery Blackman: Weaving, Life, curated in partnership with Jane Groufsky of Auckland Museum and supported by a Whiria Te Mahara New Zealand History Grant, opened to critical acclaim at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in 2024 and toured to The Dowse Art Museum in 2025.

August is currently a researcher for the Colin McCahon Legacy Project, a post-graduate supervisor on the MFA programme at Whitecliffe School of Art and Design, and completing manuscripts on Margery Blackman and Eléna Gee for publication with Rim Books in 2026.
