Clare Gleeson

I am a freelance historian specialising in New Zealand’s colonial music and gardening histories. I have had academic articles on these topics published in “New Zealand Journal of History”, “Journal of New Zealand Studies”, “Script & Print: Journal of the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand”, “Australian Garden History” and “Historic Gardens Review”. I have also written for the “Listener”, “New Zealand Gardener”” and “NZ Home & Garden.

My monograph, “Meet Me at Begg’s”, a history of the music firm Charles Begg & Co Ltd, was published in 2010 (Ngaio Press) and my chapter on owner bound collections of printed sheet music was included in “Memories of Musical Lives: Music and Dance in Personal Music Collections from Australia and New Zealand “(Lyrebird Press, University of Melbourne, 2022).

I have recently completed a book on garden designer Alfred Buxton which will be published by the Cuba Press in late 2024.
