The annual New Historians Conference, organised and hosted by Te Herenga Waka’s postgraduate History students is now extending a call for papers.12 May 2023
Historians in Social Movements
Historians have always been involved in any great movement for change. Whether the cause has been for women’s liberation, queer rights, freedom from colonisation and racial oppression, or in the union movement, historians have played a vital role in uncovering lesser-known pasts, and helping groups become conscious of their present through them.
New Historians is an annual conference hosted by postgraduate students in the History Programme at Victoria University of Wellington—Te Herenga Waka, and the call for papers is now open. This year, New Historians will be seeking papers from postgraduates on:
- Past social movements
- Events, figures, or stories related to present social movements
- The role of historians in social movements
- The role of “usable pasts” in social change
- The role of history in the backlash to or criticism of social movements
- More generally we welcome all papers that reflect on or engage with the present and future usages of any given history.
Contributions are welcome from a range of disciplines including History, Anthropology, Geography, International Relations, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, and Māori and Pacific studies.
To apply to present at the conference, please send an abstract of between 300 and 500 words, as well as a short biographical note and full contact details to newhistorians@vuw.ac.nz
The conference is open to postgraduate students in Oceania, and will be a hybrid event including an option for Zoom presentations. Priority will be given to in-person presentations which are relevant to the conference theme, but all applications will be considered.
There will be a modest registration fee which will cover lunches and am/pm tea, but not the conference dinner. This fee is currently estimated at $35 for in-person presenters, and $20 for online presenters.
Last date for submission: 16 June 2023
Conference dates: 31 August 2023 – 1 September 2023
Venue: Victoria University of Wellington, Alan MacDiarmid Building, Rooms 103 and 105
