Should PHANZA take a position on the Treaty Principles Bill?

PHANZA members will be aware that a Treaty Principles Bill is proposed to be introduced later this year, although it currently looks unlikely to pass into law. The Waitangi Tribunal recently issued an interim report, calling on the Government to abandon the Bill: https://www.waitangitribunal.govt.nz/news/tribunal-releases-report-on-treaty-principles-bill/.

Professional historians have played important roles in researching and promoting understanding of the history relating to te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi. The PHANZA committee expects that many of our members will be taking a close interest in the Bill and may be intending to make individual submissions on it.

The PHANZA committee recognises that PHANZA members are likely to have a range of views on the Bill and on whether it is or is not a matter that PHANZA should take a position on. The committee welcomes your thoughts on whether PHANZA should say anything about the Bill, and if so what. Please send your views to president@phanza.org.nz.
