PHANZA Christmas functions

There are events for Wellington and Auckland members this coming festive season.

Wellington

Our function this year will be held on Wednesday 11 December at the Education Centre, Pukeahu National War Memorial Park. Kick-off is at 5.30pm and the usual refreshments will be provided.

On the back of the Government’s announcement on the compulsory teaching of history in schools, we will hear from Ministry for Culture and Heritage staff on new initiatives for school visits to Pukeahu.

Auckland

Walking Auckland’s original shoreline, 2pm Sunday 1 December

Meet at the bottom of Constitution Hill, Mechanics Bay and walk Auckland’s original shoreline before the advances of reclamation changed the city. Two hours should allow a leisurely pace with time to admire the landmarks that once defined the town. We’ll finish at the historic Birdcage Tavern in Freemans Bay in time for happy hour drinks and snacks.

Bring and share your questions and stories:

  • Was Victoria Park once a shallow graveyard of derelict ships? Or a pre-graveyard morgue during the influenza pandemic?
  • Where was the hostel and beach where visiting out-of-town Maori pulled their canoes up?
  • Where did Lawrence Nathan and Logan Campbell erect the tents of their first trading ‘houses’?
  • Where were the watercourses?

Anyone with knowledge of any of the points along the way are most welcome to share their stories.
