In the latest from the New Zealand Journal of Public History, this week we have a review of Phoebe Li’s Golden Enterprise: New Zealand Chinese Merchants, 1860s–1970s by Sophie Loy-Wilson.
Sophie Loy-Wilson is a historian of Chinese Australian communities. Her first book was a study of China-Australia relations in the interwar years, seen through the prism of Chinese Australian communities in Shanghai. She combine’s methodological insights from labour history, overseas Chinese history, and the New History of Capitalism to bring a ‘New Materialist’ approach to Australia’s multi-ethnic and multi-lingual past.
