Call for Expressions of Interest, Editors, New Zealand Journal of History
The New Zealand Journal of History is a scholarly refereed journal publishing original and previously unpublished articles. Established in 1967 by Sir Keith Sinclair and colleagues at the University of Auckland, it is the leading journal in New Zealand history internationally. It is published twice a year and deals with all aspects of the history of Aotearoa/New Zealand including its global context.
The Governance Board of the New Zealand Journal of History is seeking expressions of interest to edit the journal for up to a 4-year term, starting in October 2025. The incoming editors will be responsible for issues dated April 2026 onwards. We seek two editors to replace the outgoing editors, Lyndon Fraser and Linda Bryder.
The journal is published by Project Muse, which handles most subscriptions, production in conjunction with our print and layout designer, and distribution. All submissions are made through an online manuscript central site, Scholastica. Editors are supported by an Editorial board, Governance Board, and the resources of the University of Auckland. The editorial positions do not include expenses or remuneration.
Those interested in the position should indicate their relevant experience, the skills they would bring to the role and their ideas for the future development of the journal. Of note is the journal’s upcoming 60th anniversary in 2027. Expressions of interest should be received by 31 October 2025.
All enquiries and submissions should be directed by 31 October 2025 to the Chair of the Governance Board, Dr Felicity Barnes, School of Humanities, University of Auckland, by email f.barnes@auckland.ac.nz. If you wish to discuss the position prior to application, please email Dr Barnes directly to arrange.
