Speakers:
James Keating, Distant sisters? Writing a history of Australasian women and the international struggle for the vote
Violeta Gilabert, Emotion, Modernity, and the Campaign for Christian Order in Aotearoa New Zealand, 1942-1946

James Keating is a historian of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Australia and New Zealand. He was the 2018 David Scott Mitchell Fellow at the State Library of New South Wales and lectures and tutors in history at UNSW Sydney. Following the stories of Australasian women, his research interrogates the dynamics of national and international women’s movements to better understand the promise and limits of transnational feminism. His writing on suffrage, the Contagious Diseases Acts, and world’s fairs has been published, among other places, in Australian Historical Studies, History Compass and Women’s History Review. His first book, Distant Sisters: Australasian Women and the International Struggle for the Vote, 1880–1914, was published by Manchester University Press in 2020.

Violeta Gilabert currently holds the Barnes Whitehead History Innovation Fund post doctoral fellowship, based at the University of Auckland. Her research interests concern histories of emotion and settler colonialism in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a focus on the status of romantic love in cross-cultural context.

This is a regular, online seminar. Each session (held via zoom) features 2 research presentations on current research in Aotearoa New Zealand Gender History, followed by discussion. To view the full schedule for the year, please click here.
