Flavia Steven-Adank, The Dress Question in Aotearoa New Zealand 1868-1914
Julia Bradshaw is Senior Curator Human History at Canterbury and has been researching women on the goldfields for at least 25 years. Julia has a background in West Coast and Otago history and a special interest in women’s history, New Zealand’s gold-rushes, Chinese New Zealanders and remote places and her publications have covered these topics.
Flavia Steven-Adank is currently undertaking a master’s thesis looking at discussions of women’s fashion in New Zealand during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With a particular focus on the dress reform movement, she is examining how these discourses connected with ideas about women, gender, and society against a backdrop of changing laws and social norms.
This is a regular, online seminar. Each session (held via zoom) features 2 x 10–12-minute research presentations on current research in Gender History with a focus on Aotearoa New Zealand, followed by discussion.
Convenors: Charlotte Greenhalgh (charlotte.greenhalgh@waikato.ac.nz) and Charlotte Macdonald (charlotte.macdonald@vuw.ac.nz)
