Ryan Bodman, A man’s game?: Some reflections on the gender history of rugby league football in New Zealand

Greg Ryan, Exaggerated domesticity, ‘slapper juice’, and the rise of the Pink Boots Society

Ryan Bodman has a Masters degree from the History Department at the University of Auckland, where he’s returning in June to start a PhD that will explore youth subcultures in Aotearoa New Zealand between 1975 and 1985. He recently completed his first book, Rugby League in New Zealand: A People’s History, which was published by Bridget Williams Books in 2023.

Greg Ryan is Professor of History and Proctor at Lincoln University. In recent years he has published on rugby, racing and beer and his most recent book is Continuous Ferment: a history of beer and brewing in New Zealand (Auckland University Press, 2023).

This is a regular, online seminar. Each session (held via zoom) features 2 x 10–12-minute research presentations on current research in Gender History with a focus on Aotearoa New Zealand, followed by discussion.
