The Judith Binney Trust was established in 2013 to honour the contribution made by Dame Judith Binney / Te Tōmairangi o Te Aroha to our understanding of the rich history of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Trust’s purpose or kaupapa is to support courageous, rigorous and imaginative scholarship of the kind that characterised Judith Binney’s historical writing.
The Judith Binney Fellowship is offered annually for an established scholar to undertake or complete a significant project in New Zealand history or related fields. The Trust also hopes to make funds available each year for the Judith Binney Writing Award, for a project by an emerging scholar or for the completion of a substantial piece of research. Remuneration for the Judith Binney Fellowships will be set between $50,000 and $80,000; for the Writing Awards, between $10,000 and $30,000.
Applications for the 2020 Judith Binney Fellowship and Judith Binney Writing Awards are invited from 19 August 2019, with a closing date of 30 September 2019. The Fellowship and Awards (if any) will be announced by 25 November 2019, for tenure in 2020.
The Judith Binney Fellowships and Awards are managed by the Judith Binney Trust, in association with the National Library of New Zealand / Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa.
